Gifted Education Program

The Integrated Programmes (IP)

The Integrated Programmes (IP) have been implemented since the beginning of 2004 to provide a seamless secondary and Junior College enriched education without requiring the pupils to sit the GCE 'O' Level Examination.  The time “saved”by not having to prepare for the GCE 'O' Level Examination is used to develop pupils’intellectual curiosity, enrich their experience and provide a broad-based education that is more in tune with desired real-world competencies.

The IP are currently offered in 7 schools – Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) [ACS(I)], Dunman High School [DHS], Hwa Chong Institution [HCI], Nanyang Girls' High School [NYGH], NUS High School of Mathematics and Science [NUSHS], Raffles Girls' School [RGS] and Raffles Institution [RI].  These 7 schools have organised school-based gifted education (SBGE) to meet the needs of the intellectually gifted.

National Junior College [NJC], Temasek Junior College [TJC] and Victoria Junior College [VJC] offer their own IP.  These, however, are not equivalent to SBGE.

SECONDARY Gifted Education

  1. Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) (Boys)
  2. Dunman High School* (Co-ed)
  3. Hwa Chong Institution  (Boys)
  4. Nanyang Girls' High School* (Girls)
  5. Raffles Girls' School (Secondary)  (Girls)
  6. Raffles Institution (Boys)
  7. NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Co-ed)

Pupils at the Secondary level can choose from various programmes:

School-based gifted education (SBGE) programmes are offered in 6 IP schools.  The SBGE programmes are designed and implemented by the schools with specialist advice from the Ministry of Education.  The schools that offer SBGE are ACS(I), DHS, HCI, NYGH,  RGS(S) and RI.  These programmes start at Secondary 1 and culminate either in the 'A' Level Examination for DHS, HCI, NYGH, RGSS and RI, or the International Baccalaureate for ACS(I).  Some of the schools take in only male/female pupils in the first 4 years of their programme.

Another option is the 6-year programme offered by NUSHS, leading to an NUS High School Diploma.

MOE’s centrally run GEP is currently offered at 3 centres.   ACS(I) is offering GEP classes at both lower and upper Secondary levels while DHS and NYGH only have upper secondary GEP classes.  The 4-year Secondary GEP is an extension of the Primary GEP and culminates in the 'O' Level Examination.  Some pupils are invited to join the school’s Integrated Programme (IP) at Secondary 3.  Since most of our GEP pupils are enrolled in the IP from Secondary 1, the Secondary GEP will be phased out by 2008.

The 2006 Primary 6 GEP pupils will be the last batch who may still opt to join the Secondary GEP in 2007.  ACS(I) and DHS will continue to offer the Secondary GEP in 2007, depending on the demand.  However, the Secondary GEP will only be offered for Secondary 1 in 2007 and Secondary 2 in 2008.  At the end of 2008, pupils admitted to Secondary 1 GEP in 2007 will have to apply to join an IP (if they meet the IP admission requirements) or an 'O' Level programme in the same school or another non-IP school, if they wish to offer the 'O' Level Examination.

After the phasing out of the Secondary GEP,  GEP pupils who wish to study in a 4-year 'O' Level programme can enrol in schools with school-based special programmes at Secondary 1.  Examples of such schools are Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), Catholic High SchoolMethodist Girls' School and St Joseph's Institution.

PRIMARY Gifted Education Programme (GEP) (Primary 4 - 6)

GEP Primary Schools

  1. Anglo-Chinese School (Primary) (Boys)
  2. Catholic High School (Primary)* (Boys)
  3. Henry Park Primary School (Co-ed)
  4. Nan Hua Primary School*(Co-ed)
  5. Nanyang Primary School*(Co-ed)
  6. Raffles Girls' Primary School (Girls)
  7. Rosyth School  (Co-ed)
  8. St Hilda's Primary School (Co-ed)
  9. Tao Nan School* (Co-ed)
In 2007, both NHPS and TNS will initiate their own new models to bring about greater interaction between GEP and non-GEP pupils at Primary 4.

NHPS will put in place a class twinning approach, and form 4 integrated classes each having a mix of about 30 GEP and non-GEP pupils. The GEP pupils will continue to take separate classes in English, Mathematics and Science. They will otherwise spend about 50% of curriculum time together with other high-ability non-GEP pupils for all the other lessons.

TNS will start 2 integrated GEP-Bicultural Chinese Elective Programme (BiCEP) classes, each comprising 25 students, for their 2007 Primary 4 students. GEP pupils who get to enrol in the BiCEP will be placed in the integrated classes and attend lessons with high-ability non-GEP BiCEP pupils for about 50% of their curriculum time.  For English, Mathematics and Science lessons, the GEP pupils will continue to have separate classes.
